Gaming Storage
How much storage does GTA 6 need?
Rockstar says the pre-load needs up to 212 GB of free space. Here's what that number does and doesn't tell you, how much room to leave, and what to do if your console is short.
The short answer: Rockstar’s own support page says the Grand Theft Auto VI pre-load needs up to 212 GB of available space, depending on your device. If you want to be comfortable on launch day, aim for a bit more than that. We use about 232 GB as a working target in our planner — the extra 20 GB is our own estimate, not an official figure.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Digital pre-load starts on November 10, 2026: at midnight local time on PS5, and at 12 a.m. GMT worldwide on Xbox, according to Rockstar.
What the 212 GB figure actually means
For months, the only numbers going around were leaks and reports. In late October 2026, a widely shared report put the PS5 download at around 210 GB. Gaming sites covered it carefully because Rockstar hadn’t confirmed it.
That changed on November 3, 2026, when Rockstar’s support team published a Pre-Load FAQ. It says the pre-load “will require up to 212 GB of available space depending on your device”. Three details are worth noticing:
- “Up to” means 212 GB is the top of the range, not an exact install size for every console.
- “Depending on your device” means PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions may differ. Rockstar hasn’t listed a separate figure for each console.
- It’s about the pre-load. Rockstar hasn’t said how big the game will be after any launch-day patch. Big games often grow after release, so the space you need on day one may be more than the pre-load.
So the honest summary is: 212 GB is official for the pre-load, and anything beyond that is an estimate.
How much free space to leave
Your console also needs some breathing room to download and install updates. That’s why we suggest a margin on top of Rockstar’s figure:
| Free space on your console | What it means |
|---|---|
| Less than 212 GB | Not enough for the pre-load. Make room first. |
| 212–232 GB | Enough for the pre-load, but tight if a patch adds more. |
| More than 232 GB | Comfortable, based on our estimate of a 20 GB buffer. |
To see your free space:
- PS5: Settings › Storage.
- Xbox Series X|S: press the Xbox button, then Profile & system › Settings › System › Storage devices.
Keep in mind that neither console gives you its full advertised storage. Xbox’s support page explains that some space is always reserved for system software and saved games. The same is true on PS5.
If you’d rather not do the maths, our free GTA 6 Storage Planner does it for you. Type your free space, pick your console, and it shows how far short you are and which options cover the gap.
If you’re short: three ways to make room
1. Delete games you’re not playing
This is free and usually fastest. On both consoles you keep the games you bought: you can download them again later from your library. Your progress is normally kept too, but check how your saves are stored first (see our guide to freeing up space without losing your favorites).
2. Move games to a USB drive
A USB hard drive is the cheapest way to “park” games you aren’t playing right now:
- PS5: PlayStation says USB extended storage must be 250 GB to 8 TB and support SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster. PS5 games can be stored there but must be copied back to play. PS4 games can be played straight from USB.
- Xbox Series X|S: Xbox says external drives must be 128 GB or larger and connect over USB 3.0/3.1. Games optimized for Series X|S can be stored on USB, but they must be moved back to internal storage or a Storage Expansion Card to play.
The important part: GTA 6 itself can’t be played from a USB drive on either console, because it’s a current-generation game. USB only frees internal space by holding your other games.
3. Add fast storage
If you regularly run out of space, adding fast internal-class storage fixes the problem properly:
- PS5 and PS5 Pro: add an M.2 NVMe SSD. Sony’s requirements include PCIe Gen4 x4, 250 GB to 8 TB, and a heatsink or other cooling. Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster. Our PS5 SSD guide walks through every requirement.
- Xbox Series X|S: add a Storage Expansion Card. Xbox says these come in 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB and perform identically to the internal SSD. See expansion cards vs USB drives.
As a rule of thumb, a 512 GB drive fills up quickly once a game of GTA 6’s size is on it. A 1 TB drive holds GTA 6 plus a few other large games, and 2 TB suits people who keep a big library installed.
Is there a PC version?
Rockstar’s official page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. No PC version or PC system requirements have been announced. Treat any “PC download” or “PC install size” you see as unofficial, and see our guide to spotting GTA 6 scams.
Quick checklist before November 10
- Check your free space and compare it with 212 GB, plus some headroom.
- Delete or move games to make room.
- Turn on automatic downloads (PS5) or automatic updates (Xbox). Rockstar’s FAQ says the console must be on or in Rest Mode / Sleep for the automatic pre-load to run.
- Leave the console in Rest Mode or Sleep overnight on November 9–10.
